Protecting Our Profession: Strategic Advocacy for CPT 92507

Building on our successful Medicaid victory last December, the NCSHLA Private Practice Professional Affairs Committee is launching a critical initiative to protect and increase our reimbursement rates. As we navigate potential changes to CPT code 92507, including a possible transition to a timed structure, we are taking proactive steps to ensure North Carolina SLPs do not move backward financially. We have partnered with Cody Underwood of Richey May, a premier strategic advisory firm, to lead a comprehensive cost-finding analysis. This data-driven approach is essential to proving the true cost of our services and negotiating fair, sustainable rates with Medicaid and other payers.

Join us for a vital informational ZOOM meeting on April 14th at 7:30 PM.

This session will provide an inside look at our advocacy strategy, the upcoming cost-finding survey, and how this expert analysis will serve as our strongest tool in future negotiations. Your engagement and data are the keys to our success. The Zoom link will be posted here on Monday, April 13th. We look forward to seeing you there as we work together to secure the future of private practice in North Carolina.

Urgent Update:  CPT Code 92507

CPT code 92507 has been flagged by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) after experiencing more than 100% utilization growth between 2017 and 2022, triggering a high-volume growth review that may result in changes to the code’s description and valuation through the AMA CPT Editorial Panel. In response, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed and proposed revisions; however, there is strong opposition to these changes due to concerns that the data informing the review do not accurately represent pediatric habilitative care. Critics argue that the proposed revisions could significantly undervalue services and ultimately reduce access to care for children.

What is NCSHLA doing?

We are alerting our members to this critical development concerning CPT code 92507 (Treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or swallowing). In addition, we are formally opposing the proposed revisions, as they rely on data that fails to represent the pediatric habilitative integrative care model and could lead to the catastrophic undervaluation of services.

The Action Plan: Supporting Proposal a826858

To protect pediatric care, we are throwing our full support behind Proposal a826858 (submitted February 13, 2026), which requests that the AMA:

  • Retain CPT 92507 in its current format and delete the proposed "New Code Set" for Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Prioritize Neurodevelopmental Needs by adopting structural modifications that accommodate a more flexible, integrated service delivery model.

  • Postpone the Review Process if modifications are deemed necessary, ensuring speech-language pathologists and stakeholders have sufficient time to submit comprehensive feedback.

Take Action: Your Voice Matters

Our official Letter of Support for this new proposal is attached to this announcement for your review. We encourage all members to submit their own comments to ensure the pediatric perspective is heard.

  • Deadline for Comments: March 31, 2026

  • How to Participate: If you would like detailed information and instructions on how to submit your own comments, please contact the Professional Affairs Committee.

  • Point of Contact: Natalie Woempner at nstokes@cheshirecenter.net.

We urge all members to familiarize themselves with this issue and stand ready to mobilize our collective voice in response to these proposed changes.
